West Ham want to sign English attacker playing abroad as pressure hits Steidten – report

West Ham want to sign English attacker playing abroad as pressure hits Steidten – report West Ham want to sign Edwards as transfer news emerges from London

Sporting CP’s Marcus Edwards has emerged as a potential West Ham target amid worries over Lucas Paqueta’s injury, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reported via its website [10 January] that the Hammers have changed their transfer plans after it emerged that Paqueta’s injury is worse than first feared, with Edwards one of the London side’s multiple targets.

It is understood that the Brazilian could be sidelined for two months with a calf injury, with Jarrod Bowen also set for a short spell in the medical room. West Ham were expecting a quiet January transfer window but that has now changed.

However, West Ham are walking a tightrope with FFP and will need to be careful with any transfers they make during this month.

    Change of plans

The injuries to Bowen and Paqueta could be detrimental to West Ham’s season following an incredible first half to the campaign, sitting in sixth in the Premier League table and topping Group A in the Europa League.

Without David Moyes’ star attacking duo, a spanner has been thrown in the works and the Hammers are, officially, panicking. And so they should be, with Michail Antonio still injured and Danny Ings’ inability to kick a football, not to mention a reoccurring issue in defence.

However, Edwards from Sporting could solve a lot of attacking problems at London Stadium, presenting as a similar character to Bowen on the wing – quick, skilful, goal threat.

    West Ham

Since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, having graduated from their esteemed academy, the now-25-year-old escaped to Portugal, with Vitoria de Guimaraes picking him up.

He scored 20 goals in 95 appearances before Sporting signed the English star, registering 21 goals and 22 assists in 91 appearances since. He has plenty of experience at Champions League and Europa League levels, boasting goal contributions against the likes of Juventus, Tottenham, Arsenal and Atalanta in recent seasons.

With a goal and an assist against the middle aforementioned teams, Edwards will fit right in at London Stadium against some of West Ham’s rivals.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers could be set to make an approach for an “unbelievable” forward as hisclub are now open to a sale.
