West Ham United contract update emerges on Ben Johnson after transfer twists
Ben Johnson is expected to be offered a new deal by West Ham in the next few days after a marked improvement in his recent performances, according to Claret & Hugh.
The West Ham news source reported on 25 January that, following Thilo Kehrer’s exit to Monaco this month, and the dip in the form of Vladimir Coufal, the Hammers are keen to tie Johnson down to a new deal.
This news has come just days after The Athletic [19 January] reported that Johnson had already turned down two new contract offers and looked set to leave for free at the end of the season.
A step up in his recent displays
Johnson’s recent cameo appearance in the centre of midfield during West Ham’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United showed a new side to his game which may have inspired the decision-makers in East London to get a new deal on the table.
His versatility, having also proved capable of playing both right and left-back, as well as as a wing-back in a different formation when called upon, could be vital to West Ham in the event that they need him to fill in for any unexpected absences.
Johnson had been linked with both Leeds United and Rangers in the January transfer window, but the Hammers are now keen to ensure he doesn’t leave the club in the immediate future.
Having already turned down two new deals at West Ham, there is no indication he would agree to a third offer when it is tabled, particularly given the interest elsewhere from clubs that could offer him increased playing time and a more important role in the team.
