View: West Ham may live to regret backing Lopetegui on one summer transfer

West Ham Kilman Max, Kilman is set for West Ham United from Wolves. West Ham United may live to regret Max Kilman transfer. West Ham United signed Max Kilman from Wolves earlier this summer – but there’s reason to believe that decision could go south.

When it was confirmed that Kilman was making his way to London Stadium, there was some real excitement. He was seen as a capable, confident defender who was previously captain for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Alas, while that ‘captain’ title may be a good one, it doesn’t tell the entire story. For months, Wolves fans made it known that while he was solid enough, Kilman never really came across as a leader. It doesn’t help that it came in the wake of Ruben Neves holding the role.

In truth, that’s just the start of it.

A Kilman problem for West Ham?

He’s proven in the past that he can be nervy on the ball, slow to react and lacking in the “commanding” qualities you’d desire from a centre-back. Plus, in 38 matches played, he was part of a squad that conceded 65 Premier League goals. In total, only six sides conceded more (PremierLeague.com).

There also isn’t likely to be much resale value, either. Yes, he’s only 27, but he’s being thrust into a starting XI where expectations are high. He’ll be seen as someone who can bring stability to a team that conceded a whopping 74 goals in the league. It certainly isn’t impossible that he finds his own, but the Hammers have even higher aspirations than his previous venture at Wolves.

It’s clear for all to see that West Ham want to bring in some more defenders. It’s smart, too, and Julen Lopetegui obviously recognises that to be an area that needs work. He also understands what Kilman is like as a player which is why he could easily turn out to be a shrewd acquisition.

Still, it’s worth noting that Wolves fans weren’t too devastated when he left Molineux. Let’s hope this isn’t a transfer that the club live to regret.

In other West Ham news, one Hammers man has been singled out as ‘key’ to making the Niclas Fullkrug deal happen.
