Tottenham scouting £20m player who has ‘enormous potential’
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Belgian prodigy Arthur Vermeeren in recent months.
Spurs are just one of several big Premier League clubs apparently eyeing the Royal Antwerp talent, as per a 90Min report from October.
As well as Tottenham, the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are reportedly in pursuit.
Now, 90Min has provided a development regarding Spurs’ pursuit of Vermeeren.
They say Tottenham had scouts present at Antwerp’s Champions League win over Barcelona.
It was a good game for Spurs’ representatives to attend, because the 18-year-old opened the scoring as Antwerp claimed a shock 3-2 win over the Camp Nou side.
When reviewing the game, Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad handed Vermeeren a 9/10 for his efforts.
They said: “Played slightly higher than usual and needed only 75 seconds to open the scoring.
“Infiltrated well and racked up several goal-ready chances. He also recovered many balls higher up the pitch.”
However, Tottenham weren’t the only ones scouting Vermeeren on the night. Apparently representatives from the Gunners were also there for the £20million-rated player.
Tottenham target Arthur Vermeeren likened to Declan Rice
If Spurs manage to get a deal over the line, they’d be landing a player similar to Declan Rice who also carries the Toby Alderweireld seal of approval.
In terms of his style of play, football.london said he’s quite similar to the Arsenal and England man.
‘Vermeeren is a cross between a traditional holding midfielder and a box-to-box midfielder,’ they say.
‘A little similar to Arsenal club-record signing Declan Rice in that respect.
‘The talented youngster is extremely capable in possession, always looking for a pass forward.
‘He is adept at progressing the ball between the lines and can be quite creative when given the chance to roam forward.’
Tottenham legend Alderweireld, the captain of Antwerp, has also lauded the reported Spurs target.
He said earlier this year, as per The Sun: “He arrived in the team by force of circumstance, but since then he has learned very quickly.
“He reads the game very well, his potential is enormous. Have I seen this before? Rarely, I think.”
