Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a bid to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, emerging as the favourites to secure the Premier League forward.
Journalist Steve Kay has shed light on this potential transfer, which has been anticipated for several months.
Speaking on KS1TV, Kay noted that the England international recently switched his representation to CAA Base, an agency closely linked with Tottenham.
Kay highlighted that Jonathan Barnett, a significant figure at CAA Base, shares a strong relationship with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. This connection could play a crucial role in facilitating Toney’s move to North London.
Kay stated (quoted via TBR):
“Yeah at this moment in time I’ve been told that Tottenham are readying a bid for him. He changed his agency to CAA Base before his ban which is basically Tottenham’s agency. There is a good sort of clue there that Tottenham would be a good destination for him. They are really interested in him, they like him a lot. You hear some strange stories about where they have met agents and where they’ve met Jonathan Barnett. Daniel and Jonathan Barnett are very good friends.”
The Lilywhites are reportedly gearing up to submit a bid for Toney, with sources suggesting a transfer fee of around £40 million.
Toney, entering the final year of his contract with Brentford, might be available at a reduced fee this summer as the Bees look to sell to avoid losing him for free next year.
Toney had an outstanding 2022-23 season, scoring 20 goals in 33 league appearances, making him the third-highest scorer in the Premier League behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
With over 350 appearances and around 200 direct goal contributions across the English Football League divisions, Toney’s experience and quality could make an immediate impact at Tottenham.
As Tottenham seek to bolster their attacking options, Toney’s potential arrival is seen as a significant move to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s departure last summer.
