Tim Steidten finally breaks silence after West Ham sacking and it’s pure class

Tim Steidten breaks silence after West Ham sacking and it’s pure class. West Ham United decided to part ways with Tim Steidten recently, after his 18-month spell at the London Stadium. Tim Steidten was announced as the new West Ham director of football in July 2023.

He fell out with David Moyes during the 2023/24 season, and the same happened with Julen Lopetegui the following season. Steidten did actually warn the Hammers owners against appointing Lopetegui in the first place.

The German clearly wasn’t a fan of the Spaniard, and the fact that the club had so many arms pulling in different directions was a sign of things to come at the London Stadium.

It has been a really poor last 12 months for West Ham on all fronts. However, with Graham Potter now at the helm, I firmly believe the future is very bright at the London Stadium.

When the 49-year-old arrived at West Ham, Steidten’s access to internal systems was taken away. Potter was a great appointment by the Hammers. That said, he has a serious amount of work to do if he is to clean up the mess left behind by Lopetegui and Steidten.

Tim Steidten breaks silence after West Ham sacking

The German is a hugely divisive figure at West Ham. Some supporters backed him to the hilt, whilst others blamed him for David Moyes’s sacking.

One thing’s for sure, Steidten and West Ham certainly wasn’t a marriage made in heaven. However, he did surprise me with the classy farewell message that he just sent the Hammers.

Steidten sent as farewell message to West Ham, when speaking to reporters in his native Germany, as quoted by Freie Presse:

“It was always my dream to work in a leading position in the Premier League. And it was actually a wonderful journey in a great club with great fans. Together we initiated many processes and new structures, signed very exciting players with a lot of potential and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League together. In the current constellation, however, it is best for everyone to go their separate ways.“

I have to say, that’s hugely refreshing to hear. That’s not to say that the timing wasn’t spot on to sack him.

Best for Steidten and West Ham to go separate ways. Steidten forged a great reputation for himself in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen. He was known as the ‘pearl-diver’ due to his ability to pick up raw, unpolished gems, who had huge ceilings.

Unfortunately, we never got to see that at West Ham. The German’s signings were underwhelming to say the least.

The acquisitions of Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme were particularly bad, and they probably cost him his job in the end.

It’s time to see what Graham Potter and Kyle Macaulay can do. I must say though, after Tim Steidten’s classy farewell message, I wish him all the best in his future endeavours following his failed stint at West Ham.
