Telegraph man tears into David Moyes and mocks ‘careful what you wish for’ narrative

A Telegraph journalist has mocked the ‘careful what you wish for’ narrative around the future of David Moyes at West Ham.

David Moyes is feeling the heat from some fans once again after his disastrous substitutions in the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle.

Some sections of the West Ham fanbase remain divided over the subject of Moyes’ future beyond this season.

Despite the manager’s brilliant achievements in the last four years, there are two very contrasting camps when it comes to Moyes.

Some supporters want continuity with Moyes and believe he deserves a new long-term deal.

They are just as entitled to their opinion as those craving a more progressive, expansive style and approach.

Disastrous Moyes substitution reignites fan debate

Those calling for change and many pundits and journalists have repeatedly warned West Ham fans to be careful what they wish for over the manager.

West Ham have been far too Jekyll and Hyde this season. And that was on full display at Newcastle.

Moyes angered West Ham fans by bringing off Michail Antonio for disastrous midfielder Kalvin Phillips on 70 minutes with his side 3-1 up and on course for a crucial win in the fight for the European places.

So when that directly resulted in the Hammers meekly surrendering the lead to lose in the last 15 minutes, the manager’s detractors were out in force.

Moyes has blasted his ‘weak’ stars over the collapse.

But now the manager has been criticised by a West Ham supporting journalist.

Journalist mocks ‘careful what you wish for’ narrative

Telegraph man Dan Silver has torn into Moyes and mocked the ‘careful what you wish for’ narrative.

Silver believes a lot of that is very much overblown.

And he says the team is totally reliant on individuals and Moyes has failed to build a good enough squad.

“Quick recap: Moyes is the best manager West Ham could hope to have but his team can’t score goals without Paqueta and can’t defend without Alvarez,” Silver said.

“And the squad he’s been solely responsible for building for four years has zero depth?

“Be careful what you wish for, Hammers!”

Last month West Ham media team man Rob Pritchard criticised those calling for change.

There are legitimate cases to be made on both sides of the great Moyes debate.

Such a shame as Hammers start to fire in attack

But Silver does make some salient points.

Obviously we are all emotional after the pathetic collapse at Newcastle – not helped by some of the ridiculous officiating yet again.

There is no excuse for that defeat, though. The manager has held his hands up over the decision to bring off Antonio for Phillips.

It’s such a shame because West Ham are looking really good as an attacking force.

They just simply cannot defend, though, and have conceded among the most

goals in the top flight this season – a terrible record.
