West Ham Women picked up a late draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, and manager Rehanne Skinner was pleased with the reaction of her side following the Hammers 5-0 defeat the previous week against Manchester City.
The Hammers goal came late in the second half in stoppage time as Shannon Cooke met Riko Ueki’s cross and headed home the equaliser to help Rehanne Skinner’s side pick up an important point away from home.
In a game where West Ham were on top for large parts of it, Skinner was pleased with the character shown by her side but disappointed they had squandered a number of goal scoring opportunities.
Having been torn apart by Manchester City the previous week, losing 5-0, Skinner was pleased with the vastly improved performance from her side and is hopeful they will be able to take the positives from this into their last home game of this season against Leicester.
Speaking to the club’s website after the game, Skinner said: “We started much better than we did last week. I obviously wanted a response from the players this week, and we definitely got that. The way that we played was much more positive in terms of our attacking football in particular.”
Despite being happy her side were able to get a result, Skinner was disappointed the Hammers could not secure all three points: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated that we didn’t take all three points. A point on the road is important but, given the nature of the game and the way that we’ve played the game, I think we deserved all three points.”
Looking ahead to West Ham’s last home game of the season this Sunday against Leicester, Skinner said: “We’re excited to have the crowd with us for that one against Leicester. We want to give our fans a good finish to the season at home, so that’s our aim for next week.”
