Premier League release statement on West Ham controversy v Everton

Premier League release official statement on West Ham controversy v Everton. West Ham United and Everton shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Going into the break goalless, the home side were handed a penalty as Beto was deemed to have been fouled, only for VAR to intervene and recommend it was overturned.

Tomas Soucek opened the scoring in the second half, after Beto was adjudged to have tripped himself, with Jake O’Brien stealing a point at the very end.

VAR drama in the first half

David Moyes’ side had the better goalscoring chances as West Ham remained on the back foot for most of the first 45 minutes, with Carlos Alcaraz the main danger.

Max Kilman and Konstantinos Mavropanos managed the dangerous Beto perfectly, and thankfully, VAR stepped in to right the wrongs of the officiating at Goodison Park.

Upon the VAR check, the penalty decision was overturned as it was adjudged that there wasn’t enough contact between Kilman and Beto to be awarded the penalty.

The Premier League then released a statement explaining the VAR decision to overturn the spot-kick, with play restarting with a drop ball.

They wrote: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Kilman on Beto – and deemed that no foul was committed, therefore recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”

West Ham career over for Guido Rodriguez?

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has seen himself on the fringes of the West Ham squad since the arrival of Potter at the London Stadium.

Rodriguez was once again on the bench for the Everton game as he last featured in January. The Argentine came on in the 90th minute but he did not play a single minute in the Irons’ last five matches with his last start coming against Crystal Palace on 18 January.

The former Real Betis midfielder has been linked with an exit and given his minimal involvement under Graham Potter, an exit is on the cards for Rodriguez. With positive results being picked up without him, it’s time to part ways.
