Postecoglou says Spurs player is ‘flying’ in training despite recent setback

Ange Postecoglou reveals that one Tottenham man is really impressing in training despite things not going his way on Thursday night against Qarabag.

    Bittersweet night for Spurs duo

While Tottenham would have been delighted to emerge 3-0 winners against Qarabag despite playing almost the whole game with just ten men, a couple of players endured frustrating nights.

One is Radu Dragusin, who was the man sent off after a lapse in concentration in the seventh minute and his subsequent foul.

The other was Lucas Bergvall, who was sacrificed following Dragusin’s sending off as Postecoglou decided to move Ben Davies to centre-back and bring on Destiny Udogie to play at left-back.

    Bergvall’s disappointment

Postecoglou confessed that Bergvall was not happy to be withdrawn so early but the Spurs head coach revealed that the 18-year-old has responded excellently to the disappointment.

When asked if he put his arm around the Swede and told him that opportunities would come his way, the Australian told Football.London: “No, but he’ll know that. We entrusted him with starting a really important game for us, so he knows how we feel about him.

“It was a tactical decision. He was disappointed. I expect him to be disappointed, but he’s going to have plenty of moments like that in his career.

“It’s always about how you respond to those things, how you grow from those things. He was training this morning – and he was flying – so he’s all good.”

Chances are just around the corner

Tottenham are entering a busy period in the season over the next couple of months, with the Carabao Cup and the Europa League now in full swing.

Postecoglou will thus have to rest many of his key players, including James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

That means that Bergvall is guaranteed to get minutes and it is up to the teenager to take his chances and show what he can do.
