‘Pathetic’ – talkSPORT host loses mind in on-air West Ham squad debate

Jason Cundy loses mind live on talkSPORT in West Ham United debate following loss vs Bristol City

Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy slammed Danny Ings and the other West Ham fringe players for failing to take their chance in Tuesday’s (16 January) defeat to Bristol City.

Ings struggled on what was just his fifth start of the campaign in West Ham’s 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay loss at Ashton Gate.

The 31-year-old led the line for a United side missing a number of big-hitters due to injuries and international call-ups.

Speaking on talkSPORT [16 January, 10:26pm], Cundy described United’s squad as “skinny” beyond David Moyes’ preferred starting XI.

Cundy also implied that former England international Ings could be coming towards the end of his career.

However, O’Hara insists every member of the West Ham squad, including Ings, should be more than capable of getting the job done against City.

“I’m sorry, but if you’re a pro footballer at highest level playing for West Ham, training week in, week out, you’re capable of putting in a performance,” he said. “This is your opportunity to impress.”

    Cundy replied: “It was pathetic.

“That performance was rotten. From the very first whistle, right through to the end – rotten. I’d love to hear what David Moyes has to say about that performance because it was indefensible.”

    Real problem

Moyes’ hand was forced somewhat for the game at Ashton Gate due to Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen – to name just three – being unavailable.

It is fair to say the back-up players did not exactly take their chance to impress, particularly in the case of attacking players Maxwel Cornet, Said Benrahma and Ings.

While Ings was singled out for criticism by O’Hara and Cundy, Benrahma deserves more of the blame as he got himself stupidly sent off with his side a goal down.

This result just goes to show that, when injuries creep in, West Ham have a real problem. More squad depth is needed for the remainder of the season, especially in terms of an out-and-out striker.

Ultimately, that is something that was already known, as is the fact that Ings, Benrahma and Cornet have nothing to offer the club. If any of those can be moved on this month, that would surely be best for everyone involved.
