‘My God’ – Peter Schmeichel blown away by improvement of one Spurs star

Peter Schmeichel says James Maddison had not lived up to the high standards he set for himself over the last two seasons at Leicester City but admitted that the attacking midfielder looks transformed under Ange Postecoglou.

Teams across the Premier League will be ruing the fact that they allowed Spurs to have a free run at Maddison as the 26-year-old has arguably been the best player in the division so far this season.

The attacking midfielder once again made the difference for Spurs against Luton on Saturday, producing a moment of magic on the right to set up Micky van de Ven for the only goal of the game.

That was the England international’s fifth assist of the season to go with his two goals in the eight league games so far, and Schmeichel admitted that he has been blown away by the former Foxes star’s displays at Tottenham.

Maddison has upped his levels from Leicester days

When asked about Maddison, the Man Utd legend told Premier League Productions (07/04/23 at 2:40 pm): “Very, very impressive. Brilliant again from Maddison. We followed Leicester for a long, long time with Maddison in the team.

“When he first broke into that team, he promised so much, then all of a sudden, it was a high-level, but not the highest level. He wasn’t producing what he is producing now.

“It seems like he has a manager who knows how to manage him, tell him precisely what his responsibilities are and use everything you are good at, then you will see the results. And, my God, the impact he has had on this Tottenham team.”

Not only was Maddison playing for a struggling Leicester side but he was often used on the left of a front three by Brendan Rodgers, which is why he did not hit the heights that he is at Spurs, even though his numbers for the Foxes were quite decent.

The 26-year-old is perfectly suited to playing as the most advanced number eight in Postecoglou’s 4-3-3 and is evidently relishing the freedom that he is being given.
