More misery for West Ham star in shock defeat that leaves boss covered in blood

More misery for West Ham star Edson Alvarez in shock defeat that leaves boss covered in blood after fan attack. Things have gone from bad to worse for West Ham star Edson Alvarez as his miserable year continues with club and country.

Edson Alvarez was one of many West Ham players whose form fell off a cliff in the second half of last season.

The Mexican had looked an excellent signing in the first half of his debut season. It says everything about his early impact that Declan Rice was not missed.

But Alvarez was dreadful from the turn of the year and ended last season being benched and criticised by David Moyes, who said the midfielder could not play 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Alvarez has started life under Julen Lopetegui in and out of the Hammers side too.

‘Immobile’ Alvarez was singled out as West Ham’s biggest problem by pundits on Match of the Day recently. Alvarez’s painful lack of pace and athleticism means he continually finds himself making desperate last ditch lunges.

More misery for West Ham star Edson Alvarez in shock defeat. He has also become a complete liability as a yellow and red card magnet, twice being stupidly sent off – at Liverpool and Forest – costing West Ham dear in the process.

The 27-year-old has angered Hammers fans by persistently talking up a potential move away.

Statistically only four players have been worse than Alvarez for West Ham this season.

And all of those have barely played. Even Andy Irving and Niclas Fullkrug – who has been out for nearly three months – have a better average match rating than Alvarez’s poor 6.1/10.

The £34m signing, who will be available again for West Ham’s game at Newcastle next week after a one-game ban, has also struggled with his country too.

He suffered a hamstring injury which ended his Copa America involvement in the summer and ruled him out of pre-season. Now there’s more misery for West Ham star Alvarez in a shock defeat that leaves his boss covered in blood after a fan attack.

Alvarez started for Mexico in their CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final first leg against Honduras. The Hammers midfielder’s struggles continued, though.

He failed to help protect the back four and offered little control in midfield as the hosts won 2-0.

Alvarez must have felt like he was playing for West Ham as Mexico registered just one shot in the first half.

Things took a nasty turn at the final whistle too.

Alvarez’s manager Javier Aguirre was left covered in blood after a can was thrown at his head from the stands.

Objects rained down on him from the stands and one struck his head as he went to shake hands with the Honduras manager. Blood can be seen pouring from the wound in very unsavoury scenes.

If selected, West Ham’s out of form midfielder will be in action in what now threatens to be a feisty second leg on Tuesday.

Both sides will travel to Toluca for the second leg of the Nations League quarterfinal that will be hosted by Mexico on November 19th.

Alvarez will need to step his game up in front of a passionate home crowd.

The last West Ham fans heard about or from Alvarez was when he issued an apology following his red card at Forest.

The former Ajax man apologised to his teammates and Hammers fans for the unnecessary dismissal.

Notably, though, Alvarez did not include manager Lopetegui in his apology.

Alvarez was seen showing dissent towards the Spaniard when substituted in a cup win over Bournemouth. Lopetegui and Alvarez also blanked one another when the midfielder walked right past the West Ham boss as he left the pitch at the City Ground.
