They explain that the former Spain coach has ‘pulled away’ from West Ham as he has convinced AC Milan that he is the right man to lead them.
The club’s management were impressed by him when they met, and his more prestigious CV compared to other candidates has made him the favourite.
Milan want an international coach, good at working with youngsters who will happily accept the transfers he’s given rather than imposing his own will. And the belief is that Lopetegui ticks all of those boxes.
Contacts with his agents have been frequent in recent days and there has been a change of pace over that period because West Ham are in the background.
They’ve made a ‘rich offer’ to the former Wolves coach, but he is holding them at arm’s length despite the bid they’ve made.
He’s long made it clear that Milan would be his preferred destination and that remains the case at this moment in time and they’re of a similar mind.
A deal could be done in May and in the meantime, there will be plenty of offers presented to try and sway Milan’s thinking, while we’re sure that West Ham will perhaps try again to convince Lopetegui as well.
There could be plenty of drama on the way but at the moment, it appears the Hammers have missed out despite putting their money on the table.
