Man Utd takeover boost means nothing now for Tottenham as £115m deal off for good

Reports have emerged claiming that the Glazers are set to take Manchester United off of the market.

Reports of the Glazer family taking Manchester United ‘off the market’ will have sent shockwaves through the Premier League, with fears of the Old Trafford outfit potentially having the lucrative backing of Qatari Sheikh Jassim going forward. Tottenham are potentially one of the sides that may have been fooled into viewing the news as a boost, with both clubs interested in Brighton star Evan Ferguson, but it truly means very little.

Spurs are impressing under Ange Postecoglou and the arrivals of Manor Solomon and James Maddison has given the team a new edge in the final third. Although they are scoring for fun, the major injection of creativity has seen many question how many goals Harry Kane would have scored if he remained in North London rather than heading to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham decided not to directly replace the England international this summer and opted to rely on Richarlison and the versatility of Heung-min Son to provide the cutting edge up top. However, it has been speculated that their pursuit of a true No 9 was actually put on pause as they will pursue Ferguson further down the line.

The 18-year-old has emerged as the latest breakthrough star at Brighton, scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle on Saturday to take his tally to 10 goals in 23 Premier League appearances. The Seagulls are likely to demand a mammoth fee for the services of the teenage sensation next summer as the forward continues to thrive, with £115million speculated as a potential price tag.

Although a record-breaking fee for an Irish player, such a figure would not have been an issue for United – also holding an interest in the striker – if Sheikh Jassim was at the helm of the club. However, despite a takeover no longer looking on the cards, Spurs have not received a boost in their pursuit of Ferguson regardless.

The former Bohemians star decided to commit his long-term future to Brighton earlier this year and signed a bumper contract extension at the Amex Stadium. The new deal has thus given Roberto De Zerbi’s side major leverage in negotiations if bids arrive at the end of the season, as well as rewarding the player for his rise through the ranks.
