West Ham board slammed by Kieran Maguire for ‘broken promises’
West Ham chiefs have made David Moyes a “fall guy” to deflect from their own mistakes and broken promises.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that West Ham fans were sold promises that things would improve significantly after their move to the London Stadium.
The Hammers announced last week that Moyes will be leaving at the end of the season after four-and-a-half years as manager.
The Scot led West Ham to European success last season when they lifted the Europa Conference League.
Julen Lopetegui is now set to replace Moyes in the Hammers hot seat next season, with Moyes taking control of his final game this weekend against title-chasing Manchester City.
Maguire believes Moyes’ exit is being used to deflect from the shortcomings of the club’s board of directors.
“David Moyes has delivered West Ham’s first trophy in the best part of half a century,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“He has delivered European football on three occasions and has created many memories for fans as part of their European adventures.
“At the same time, the fan base do have high expectations.
“They were sold promises that things would improve following the move from Upton Park to the London stadium and the jury is out from the fanbase as to whether that’s been delivered.
“Moyes would appear to be the fall guy in terms of the expectations of the board of directors who are perhaps using the termination of his contract to deflect attention from their own mistakes.”
