It appears first-team coach may now have left Tottenham Hotspur

Despite no official confirmation on whether he has remained with the club, it appears set-piece coach Gianni Vio will not be working with Tottenham Hotspur this season.

The experienced Gianni Vio was brought in last summer to assist Antonio Conte and his side in capitalising on set-piece opportunities.Clearly, his work was a success, as Tottenham managed to score 16 goals from set-piece situations during the 2022/23 campaign. Only Liverpool managed more than Spurs from these situations.

Despite all the struggles last season, in a year where Spurs slumped to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League, the output from set-pieces was an area of vast improvement for the club compared to previous seasons.

With Conte gone, and his predominantly Italian coaching staff departing, too, many wondered whether Gianni Vio would stick around. That he did, however, remaining with Spurs to work alongside Ryan Mason until the end of last season.

Is Gianni Vio still at Tottenham?

Now, new manager Ange Postecoglou has taken over the reins in North London, and has assembled his own coaching team. Mason is part of that unit, as are Chris Davies, Mile Jedinak, Matt Wells, and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch.

According to a report from Football.London, however, it seems Vio is not joining that team for the new campaign. Apparently, the Italian “has not been a part” of the Postecoglou era.

Up until now, the official word has been that “a decision had not yet been made” by the club as to whether to retain Vio’s services.

The 70-year-old very much operates on a “freelance basis” and with “no sightings” of the coach around the training ground or on the pre-season tour, it is widely believed his time with Spurs “has come to a close.”

It is a shame to see Gianni Vio go if that is indeed the case, as he clearly made a big impact on the squad and helped us out massively last year.
