“If the price is right” | West Ham eye up £50 million defender to replace Johnson

West Ham are looking to sign £50 million defender to replace the departing Ben Johnson this transfer window. Ben Johnson’s final months as a West Ham player haven’t exactly gone to plan. Despite repeated attempts, West Ham looked like they had failed to convince the right-back to stay in at his boyhood club after he received strong offers from the likes of Crystal Palace. However, things changed over the past few weeks where it then looked certain he would extend his contract, before one final twist saw him move to newly promoted Ipswich.

While this is yet to be made official, so there’s still time for him to change his mind, a combination of higher wages and guaranteed first-team football have led to the Hammers needing to find a new right-back this Summer.

According to The Times, West Ham could look to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a replacement. The Englishman joined Manchester United back in 2019 for £50 and while he’s been decent for the Red Devils, he’s certainly not been worth the money.

With just one year remaining on his contract, United may look to cash in on the 26-year-old rather than lose him for free in 12 months time.

Whether or not he’d start straight away over Vladimir Coufal is up for debate. The Czech international is much better when going forward, but Wan-Bissaka is superb when defending.

Obviously there are other options being considered, but if the price is right it could be a very enticing move for our Irons.
