Darren Ambrose has backed Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
The 27-year-old is currently banned until January after he accepted that he broke the FA’s betting rules, but that hasn’t stopped people from tipping him for a transfer. Tottenham sold Harry Kane this summer and they will be looking for that proven goalscorer to come in, with Ambrose labelling Ivan Toney as an ‘ideal’ player for the club, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports.
Last season, for a Brentford side many were tipping to struggle, he scored 20 Premier League goals, including earning England caps.
On the field of play, that saw his stock hit serious heights, but it’s off the field where he started taking the verbal hits.
Nonetheless, former Premier League midfielder Ambrose, who is a boyhood Spurs fan, wants to see Toney at his club as soon as possible.
“Well, you could say he has already gone to the top,” said Ambrose. “He has already played for England. Already played in the Premier League for Brentford.
“If you are talking can he go to the Champions League? Yes, I think he can. I think he is an exceptional forward. Who needs a number nine?
“Harry Kane leaving Spurs need a number nine? He is an ideal player, but of course, he is suspended until January. But he is only 27. I think he will have a point to prove.”
Could Toney leave in January?
There is even talk that, as soon as Toney is allowed to play on 17 January, there is a chance he could be sold during the winter transfer window.
Would that make sense? On one hand, he will be very rusty, so the buying club will need more than a few weeks just for him to find any rhythm.
Plus, Brentford would be better off selling him next summer when clubs are willing to throw more money at the player, especially if he starts scoring again towards the back end of this season.
