‘I was concerned about it’ David Moyes explains disastrous decision that cost West Ham against Newcastle

‘I was concerned about it’ David Moyes explains disastrous decision that cost West Ham against Newcastle

David Moyes addressed the media after West Ham United threw away a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 to Newcastle in the Premier League this afternoon.

Newcastle beat West Ham 4-3 in the Premier League today after David Moyes made a questionable substitution, and here’s how we rated the Hammers players.

We really should have won that game today. Moyes’s decision to bring on Kalvin Phillips in place of Michail Antonio after 68 minutes was an unforgivable one.

West Ham were so dangerous on the counter but when the 34-year-old left the field we had no threat going forward whatsoever.

Phillips, 28, gave away the penalty, perhaps unluckily so. However, he should have just cleared the ball straight away rather than take a touch, and he was completely unaware of his surroundings.

The Manchester City owned midfielder cost us the game today. But what did Moyes make of the match?

Moyes addressed the media after our terrible collapse up at St James’ Park against the Toon today.

The defeat feels like it has put paid to our hopes of finishing inside the top six this season, and if we’re being honest, seventh place feels a long way away now as well.

The Scot bringing on Phillips in place of Antonio was a major contributing factor to our defeat, and he explained why he made that decision, as quoted by TNT Sports:

David Moyes explains decision that cost West Ham against Newcastle

“Newcastle had created two chances before that (Newcastle’s second penalty) and I was concerned about it. We took Michail off at 3-1. We thought we needed another midfielder on. Newcastle were beginning to get a bit of domination in the middle of the pitch. We thought that midfield player would give us a little extra but it wasn’t to be.”

Classic Moyes this isn’t it. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.

In fact, Moyes did it two weeks ago in our last game against Aston Villa. When he took Antonio off, we had absolutely no pace in the final third, and we were no longer able to hit our opponents on the counter attack.

David Moyes was one of the reasons why West Ham lost to Newcastle today. The referee’s shocking performance was another.

Let’s just hope that the boys bounce back against Tottenham on Tuesday night.
