West Ham star Andy Irving breaks silence and responds to Hammers fans – ‘I try not to pay attention’. Andy Irving announced himself to the West Ham United fans with a wonder goal during our pre-season friendly clash with Dagenham and Redbridge.
West Ham beat Dagenham 1-0 at Victoria Road yesterday, or what is now known as the Chigwell Construction Stadium.
Andy Irving was introduced to the game by Julen Lopetegui at half-time, and the 24-year-old seems to have already established himself as a cult hero amongst the Hammers fans.
Ex-West Ham boss David Moyes signed the midfielder from SK Austria Klagenfurt on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2023, and then immediately loaned him back to the Austrian club.
And the 24-year-old openly admitted earlier this year that it is his dream to play for the Hammers next season.
Well, that dream could now become a reality for Irving, after his superb strike for West Ham yesterday…

The 24-year-old Hammers midfielder needed to do something during pre-season to really catch Lopetegui’s eye. I feel like a lot of people were writing him off too quickly, myself included.
The Scot deserves a chance at the very least, and it will be interesting to see how he performs against Premier League sides out in the United States next week.
Could Irving be our John McGinn? There’s no reason why not.
He spoke to WHUFC.com after yesterday’s game and responded when asked about his rapid rise to Hammers cult hero.
“To be honest, I try not to pay too much attention to it as I’m not on Twitter and all that, but obviously I get sent some stuff and it makes me laugh, so it’s great and I want to keep enjoying it,“ he said.
“The main aim for me is to keep impressing. As I said, this is a huge opportunity for me I’m trying to grab with both hands. I’m getting massive experience learning from the gaffer and from the quality of player we have here,“ he said.
It’s up to Andy Irving to prove to Lopetegui that he has the quality needed to play for West Ham now. With three pre-season games remaining, he will have plenty of opportunities to do just that.
The 24-year-old showcased his ability to strike a ball yesterday, but I still feel as though he needs to up the levels of his all-round game.
All eyes will be on Andy Irving out in Jacksonville for our clash with Wolves on Saturday July 27th.
