Darren Ambrose has backed Flynn Downes to replace Declan Rice in the middle of the park for West Ham United following his transfer to Arsenal.
The former Premier League midfielder stated that he is a ‘huge admirer’ of the 24-year-old and stated that he is a player that has been ‘on the edge’, as he told talkSPORT
Ambrose did mention another linked target to West Ham, the Ajax star Edson Alvarez, but instead, he seemed to back towards Flynn Downes to replace Declan Rice.
Last season, he played over 700 minutes of Premier League football under David Moyes and a number of starts during the early stages of their Europa Conference League triumph.
There is talk that he could head for the exit door this summer, with his current contract at the London Stadium expiring in 2027.
Of course, the Hammers still have to spend money on new faces to come in, but Ambrose did want to throw Downes’ name into the hat.
“Edson Alvarez has been spoken about, whether he can come in to replace Declan Rice,” said Ambrose. “What about a Flynn Downes?!
“A player that has been on the edge. I know there are rumours that he could leave West Ham. But I am a huge admirer of him.”
Rice won’t be replaced
West Ham need to think long-term when bringing new faces in rather than looking towards one or two players to fill his void.
Given how important Rice was to the club, it will be difficult that, within 12 months, his replacement will be found.
It might be the case that they make one or two mistakes, before getting it right. Moyes’ problem is that he can’t afford such mistakes because, whilst they won the Europa Conference League last season, their Premier League campaign was nothing to shout about.
