Mark Schwarzer says Hugo Lloris is ‘still a very good goalkeeper’ as his career at Tottenham Hotspur seems all but over.
It might be a case of goalkeepers union here, but Schwarzer, who made 514 Premier League appearances, stated that he is a ‘big fan’ of Tottenham’s dethroned number one, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.
Many expected Hugo Lloris to head for the exit door this summer, but instead, he stayed put with a number of moves either being turned down or just not going through.
This is despite Spurs being open to their £12 million signing from 2012 (BBC Sport) leaving and the player himself happy to go.
Late on transfer deadline day, there was even talk of a possible move to Newcastle United, but nothing happened and now Lloris is still at Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou’s third-choice keeper.
Summer signing Guglielmo Vicario is the main man between the sticks, – he has been sent a warning – with Fraser Forster playing in the recent EFL Cup defeat to Fulham, as Schwarzer shared his thoughts on Lloris.
“I am a big fan of Hugo Lloris,” said Schwarzer. “I know he hasn’t had a great time at Spurs over the last couple of seasons, he has made high-profile mistakes and been injured as well.
“I think he is still a very good goalkeeper.”
Unlikely Lloris plays for Tottenham again
With two players ahead of him, never mind Lloris not playing for Spurs again, he might not even make the club’s matchday squad again.
It’s a shame how it is all ending for the World Cup-winning goalkeeper because he has served Spurs very well over the years, including helping them to the Champions League final.
But, in truth, a change in between the sticks should have been made years ago because that’s how long Lloris has been producing error-prone and questionable performances.
