‘Flimsy’: Richard Keys is not convinced by £40m Tottenham player who’s ‘good’ at best

Richard Keys says £40m Tottenham player is ‘flimsy’ and ‘good’ at best. Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy on the transfer front over the coming weeks as Ange Postecoglou looks to add the finishing touches to his squad.

Spurs have made two senior signings so far this summer, bringing Archie Gray and Dominic Solanke to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Lucas Bergvall has also arrived at Tottenham after a deal was struck with Djurgardens in January, while Yang Min-hyuk is set to link up with Spurs next year.

It remains to be seen who else will join Tottenham in the coming weeks, and at the same time, Spurs will be getting their Premier League campaign under way this month.

Tottenham were in top-four contention for much of last season, but fell short in the final few weeks and had to settle for fifth place. Richard Keys has now spoken about Spurs and where he hopes they finish in the league, while also giving praise to one Lilywhites player and criticising another.

Richard Keys slates ‘flimsy’ Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

Keys, writing on his personal website, admitted he hopes Tottenham finish in the top four next term, though he stopped short of predicting they would.

He also said he liked Postecoglou, and described Dominic Solanke’s arrival as a “really good piece of business”, albeit “not enough.

Keys then went on to describe James Maddison as “flimsy” and no more than “good”, adding that “he needs help” in the middle of the park.

“I’ve no idea who finishes third and fourth,” said Keys. “It’s a real lottery. I hope Spurs do.

“I like big Ange, but I’m not convinced they can be good enough across a whole season.

“Solanke is a really good piece of business, but it’s not enough.

“Maddison is good – no more – and flimsy. He needs help in that midfield.” Maddison joined Tottenham to much fanfare last summer and was impressive in the opening weeks of the season.

However, after the £40million man came back from injury, he wasn’t quite the same. He finished last season poorly, which cost him his place at Euro 2024. Maddison will now be up against his former club, Leicester City, in Tottenham’s opening game of the new season.

The 27-year-old man absolutely needs to deliver on Monday night. If not, there’s a good chance that Lucas Bergvall, who has enjoyed a great pre-season, could overtake him in the pecking order soon.
