Revealed: Major update on West Ham agreeing ‘record-breaking’ Victor Boniface deal
West Ham are unlikely to seal a big-money move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface this month, sources have told Football Insider.
Recent reports have suggested the Irons are preparing a bid for the 23-year-old which could break the club’s transfer record.
It has been claimed that West Ham director of football Tim Steidten is pushing for Boniface as a potential solution to their striker search.
However, the Nigeria international is currently out of action with a groin injury which required surgery and kept him out of the African Cup of Nations.
That problem is set to keep him sidelined until March at least – meaning Boniface would miss crucial games for any potential new club in the league and in Europe.
His unavailability has put top English clubs off moving for Boniface this month.
In addition, Bayer Leverkusen are unwilling to allow the red-hot striker to leave the club mid-season as they chase a historic Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen, who have never won a top-flight league title, are seven points clear of second place Bayern Munich having played a game more than their rivals.
Boniface has hit 16 goals and eight assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.
He is under contract until June 2028 after only joining from Union Saint-Gilloise last summer (2023).
West Ham’s only senior striker at present is Danny Ings – with Michail Antonio out of action with a long-term knee injury.
The Irons sit sixth in the Premier League after their 2-2 draw against last-place Sheffield United on Sunday (21 January).
