Emerson Palmieri could be the last man standing from disastrous £187 million West Ham transfer splurge

Emerson Palmieri could be the last man standing from disastrous £187 million West Ham transfer splurge

West Ham United signed Italian left-back Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea back in the summer of 2022.

David Moyes convinced the West Ham board to part with £13 million to bring Emerson Palmieri to the London Stadium from Stamford Bridge just under two years ago. After a slow start to life at West Ham, the 29-year-old has proven to be an exceptional signing by Moyes, and has undoubtedly been one of our best and most consistent performers this season.

The Hammers left-back has been pivotal to everything good that we’ve done as a team this season, and we’re completely lost without him. Emerson is a hugely popular figure at the London Stadium, and Chelsea must really be regretting selling him to us now.

He has been one of the best left-backs in the Premier League this season, if not the best.

And now the Italian may well be the last man standing for West Ham after a really disappointing mega-money transfer splurge

So, the Italian may well outlast numerous other key players at West Ham, or at least those who we thought were going to important to the Hammers rebuild.

What a turnaround that is from the days when he was being written off as a £13 million flop!

Moyes spent around £187 million in the signings of Emerson, Lucas Paqueta, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Nayef Aguerd, Thilo Kehrer, Flynn Downes and Danny Ings in the 2022/23 season (Transfermarkt).

Out of those signings, only the Italy international and Paqueta can be considered as good signings.

Scamacca has already been sold whilst Kehrer joined Monaco on loan in January, with a permanent deal almost a formality. Meanwhile, Cornet, Aguerd, Ings and Downes have all been heavily linked with exits after failing to impress at the London Stadium.

In addition to that, Lucas Paqueta is being strongly linked with a move to Manchester City, and the Brazilian apparently has his heart set on joining the Premier League and Champions League holders next season.

As things stand, it is looking like Emerson Palmieri could well be the last man standing from the disastrous 2022/23 summer and winter transfer windows.

In fairness, aside from Emerson, it’s only Paqueta out of the names mentioned above who I would be sad to see go.
