Eddie Howe disagrees as Premier League issue Newcastle United v West Ham statement

Eddie Howe disagrees as Premier League issue Newcastle United v West Ham statement. Jordan Cronin. Eddie Howe and Callum Wilson felt Newcastle United were perhaps unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty in their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United. The Magpies were already trailing to goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka when Wilson was wrestled to the ground by Konstantinos Mavropanos when attempting to meet Jacob Murphy’s cross. Wilson protested furiously to referee Craig Pawson but VAR stuck with the original call.

Explaining the decision, the Premier League, via its official Match Centre account, wrote on X: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by Mavropanos on Wilson was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was not sufficient for a penalty.

However, neither Howe or Wilson thought it was the correct decision on initial viewing.

Howe said: “Yeah I possibly do. It’s difficult for me to say. I’ve looked at it once and I haven’t seen it again. When I looked at it live I felt it was a really good shout for a penalty, someone might tell me different but I thought it was a good chance.”

Meanwhile, Wilson said: “When it’s happening so fast and in the heat of the moment, the cross is coming in and you feel like you’re about to head it and all of a sudden you find yourself on the floor, there is only one reason why that can happen and it’s probably a push in the back.

“I’ll have to watch it back but I can’t hold my ground once I’m in the air because you’re off the floor. A little frustrated not to get given that but I’ll watch it back, review it.”

It was Wilson’s first appearance of the campaign after recovering from a back issue. He and his teammates missed the opportunity to move up to sixth in the Premier League able by losing.
