‘Disgrace’… Troy Deeney stunned by decision West Ham are said to have made
West Ham United are set for a new era with a new manager at the helm as of this summer. The Hammers recently announced that David Moyes would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Julen Lopetegui is expected to become the new West Ham boss, though the club will reportedly delay an announcement until Moyes is no longer manager.
Reaction among the Hammers fanbase to the prospect of Lopetegui taking over from Moyes hasn’t been particularly positive.
Troy Deeney has now given his verdict on the reported appointment, and he doesn’t seem to be on board with the West Ham decision either. What has Troy Deeney said about West Ham reportedly appointing Julen Lopetegui as manager?
Deeney wrote in The Sun: “West Ham’s decision to replace David Moyes with Julen Lopetegui is a disgrace.
“I don’t buy all this, ‘Be careful what you wish for’ nonsense. The fans want a change and they are within their rights to demand that.
“They want a different style of play, more attacking excitement. But then the fans get lumbered with another defensive-minded coach. I don’t understand it.
“And even worse, this guy quit on Wolves the week before the season started.
“That’s the question the West Ham players will want answering: ‘Why did you quit? Will you quit on us?’
“Lopetegui has a poor record in England. A 37 percent win rate at Wanderers is hardly stellar.”
Not much enthusiasm for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham
Lopetegui may have a fairly good CV, having managed the likes of Spain, Real Madrid, Porto, Sevilla and Wolves – but despite this, there isn’t much enthusiasm for him to take the West Ham reins.
This would’ve been a good chance for the Hammers to get a young, progressive manager like Graham Potter to take the solid foundations Moyes has put in place and build on them.
Instead, Lopetegui seems more like a continuation of Moyes, not to mention him leaving Wolves before the start of the season hasn’t gone particularly well with the Hammers fanbase.
Obviously he could go on to prove everyone wrong, but as an initial appointment (as per reports), it hasn’t proven particularly inspiring.
