Despite Klopp permitting a £19 million departure, Liverpool promised that a “complete striker” would start ahead of Nunez.

One of Liverpool’s former players is now excelling in the Premier League after hitting the goal trail.

Dominic Solanke would be starting up front for Liverpool ahead of Darwin Nunez if the striker was still at the club. That’s according to former Reds defender Jose Enrique who was asked to name his current Premier League Team of the Season.

Liverpool signed Solanke in the summer of 2017 when his contract at Chelsea was allowed to expire. It had been hoped that he would follow in the path well trodden by Daniel Sturridge but the England U21 international struggled to make an impact scoring just once in 21 Premier League appearances.

With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino firmly established as the Anfield club’s devastating front three, Solanke was allowed to join Bournemouth in January 2019 for a reported £19m transfer fee.

After suffering relegation with the Cherries, he helped them to return to the Premier League after scoring 15 Championship goals during the 2020-21 season. On his return to the top flight he found the net six times, but it has been a different story this season.

The 26-year-old already has 12 goals in 19 Premier League appearances and has spearheaded a dramatic upturn in fortunes under Andoni Iraola, having won four of their last five matches.

Dominic Solanke has been in superb form for Bournemouth this season.

Only Salah and Erling Haaland have scored more times than Solanke in the Premier League during the current campaign, prompting former Liverpool left-back Enrique to include him in his current Team of the Season.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, the ex-Spanish U21 international went one further by claiming that on current form Solanke would even start in Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead of all of the German’s current forwards apart from Salah.

Enrique said: “Mohamed Salah is an obvious pick on the right wing and he has been unbelievable again, but one former Liverpool player who I would put in attack is Dominic Solanke.

“He is having a great season and I actually believe that he would start for Liverpool right now because he has been unbelievable. He’s good in the air, strong, quick, he keeps the ball well and he’s a great finisher – he is a complete striker.”
