David Moyes’ possible West Ham United successor identified with ‘only worry’ admission made

A former Premier League forward has backed an EFL boss to succeed David Moyes as manager of West Ham United

Former Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has suggested that Ipswich Town head coach, Kieran McKenna, could be the man to succeed David Moyes as West Ham United manager.

McKenna has been linked with a slew of high-profile jobs in football management over the last year – his success with the Tractor Boys has turned the heads of several Premier League outfits, such as Brentford and Crystal Palace [via the Daily Mirror].

Meanwhile, it is currently unclear what Moyes will do at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. His current deal with West Ham is due to expire in the summer – while he has been offered a new contract, he is currently weighing up his options and will not make a decision ‘until the end of the season’.

On Ben Foster’s official YouTube channel, speaking on the prospect of McKenna possibly joining another club, Bent said: “That’s the only worry. He’s been phenomenal, and if Ipswich don’t go up… There’s so many people that would take him I think. West Ham potentially with David Moyes. There’s so many options.”

Would Kieran McKenna be a good fit for West Ham United?

In many ways, McKenna and Moyes are similar managers. While McKenna tends to lean towards a possession-based style of play as opposed to Moyes’ long ball game, they both like their strikers to hold up the ball and create chances for their teammates – additionally, they both coach their teams to get the most out of attacking set-pieces.

With this in mind, should McKenna take over from the former Everton boss, he shouldn’t have too much of an issue implementing his style of play. In some ways, the current crop of Irons players would suit McKenna’s approach more than Moyes’ – technically, they have the ability to play attractive attacking football and should not be restricted by dogmatic counter-attacking tactics.
