David Moyes lets slip that one West Ham player is already running out of steam

David Moyes inadvertently makes concerning admission about West Ham man Tomas Soucek

West Ham boss David Moyes has inadvertently suggested that Tomas Soucek is struggling with the sheer volume of games.

Tomas Soucek has been like a man re-born for West Ham this season, after struggling for form and confidence last term.

Hammers boss David Moyes stuck by the 28-year-old during his struggles last season, and now with Declan Rice having left to join Arsenal, we are seeing the best of the Czech Republic international once again.

Big Tomas already has three goals to his name this season – the same amount that he scored during the entire 2022/23 campaign.

Soucek is a man re-born this term, and it really is great to see. However, is there a danger of Moyes overplaying him due to the Hammers’ reliance on his aerial ability? The Scot seemed to inadvertently hint that the former Slavia Prague midfielder is beginning to feel the effects of playing so many games…

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek is running out of energy

Moyes addressed the media after yesterday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United at the London Stadium.

And the Scot offered a reason as to why his team seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the match yesterday, as quoted by WHUFC.com:

“There were things we liked in the first half with the chances we made, but in the second half we looked as if we just ran out of energy. Maybe the midweek League Cup game took its toll, not just generally on all the players, but particularly on some of them.”

The thing is, Soucek is the only player who started both the midweek game and the Premier League clash with Sheffield United, so it must have been him that Moyes was talking about.

Since joining the Hammers on loan in January 2020, Soucek has played 163 games for Moyes’s side. That’s a serious amount of matches in just 3.5 years.

If Moyes is concerned about West Ham ace Tomas Soucek starting to feel the heat in his legs, he should definitely rest him for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Freiburg.

If the Scot persists with playing him week-in week-out, he will eventually break. Considering how good he has been for us this season, Moyes can’t afford that to happen.

And with that in mind, it’s time for big Tom to be rested in my opinion.
