‘Crazy money’ – Fabrizio Romano reveals why Spurs pulled out of race for 19-year-old

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Giorgio Scalvini last summer but found Atalanta’s asking price for the youngster to be excessive.

Scalvini has emerged as one of the best young centre-backs in the Serie A over the last few years, having already made 64 appearances in the Italian top flight despite being just 19 years of age.

The teenager has also established himself as a regular in Italy’s starting eleven over the last 12 months and it appears as if it is only a matter of time before he makes a switch to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Tottenham were linked with a whole host of centre-backs last summer before eventually signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, with the Dutchman proving a revelation since arriving in North London.

Tottenham were looking at bidding for Scalvini

Romano has now stated that the Lilywhites were also exploring a move for Scalvini during the last transfer window but were put off by the defender’s price.

The journalist told Kick: “We have the best Italian player U21 winning the award right now. This is Giorgio Scalvini. The centre-back of Atalanta, a very talented player, we know him very well in Italy, but not as well known in Europe, but he is very good.

“He’s on the radar of many clubs, for example, I heard, last summer, Tottenham were considering a move, he was one of the secret players that they had on the list at Tottenham, but they decided to go for something different because Atalanta were asking crazy money for Scalvini.”
