A fan favourite Hammer could be on his way to a club that West Ham have a fractured relationship with.
Despite being slowly phased out over the past couple of seasons, Angelo Ogbonna is one of the finest defenders West Ham have had in a long time. His superb tackling, his aerial ability and his overall class quickly saw him become a fan favourite in East London, and that love only got stronger throughout his 9-year-long spell at the club.
Although it was extremely sad to see him go when his contract expired last month, it was probably best for all parties that he left. His age had finally caught up with him, and now the Italian Stallion is looking for a new club.
Interestingly, according to Football Italia, he could return to his home nation of Italy to join Fiorentina as they look to return to Europe after losing back-to-back Conference League finals.
West Ham’s relationship with Fiorentina is an interesting one. Before the final there was very few connections between the two clubs, but hooliganism before the match, cups being thrown at their players during it, and the manager’s conduct after Jarrod Bowen broke their hearts meant that there’s a bit of animosity between the two.
With that being said, it’s hard to imagine that would affect the reception Ogbonna got from either set of fans, especially considering that he’d probably still do a great job in Italy where the football is a lot slower than it is in the Premier League.
Wherever he ends up, he will have nothing but love and support from the East London faithful. Hopefully he can have a brilliant end to an unbelievable career.
