Tottenham Hotspur signed Guglielmo Vicario at the start of the season. The 27-year-old Italian goalkeeper has been quite impressive for his new club and he has managed to replace Hugo Lloris adequately. The French international was the first-choice keeper at Tottenham prior to his arrival and he cost his side valuable points last season.
Tottenham needed to sign a reliable goalkeeper to replace Lloris and they opted to move for Vicario after his impressive performances with Empoli.
Popular pundit Clive Allen has now revealed that he wasn’t convinced with the Italian goalkeeper at the start but the player has managed to prove him wrong and win over his confidence.
Allen added that Vicario has grown into a commanding goalkeeper for Tottenham and his performances have been quite impressive. He added that the Italian has been a massive find for the Premier League club, despite his uneasy start to life in England.
He told talkSPORT on Monday morning (11/12/23): “I wasn’t convinced at the start I have to say, there was just a little bit of unease in the way that he started. But I think he’s grown in confidence, he’s commanding his penalty box which you always need in a goalkeeper.
“He backs the back line up really well and everybody talks about how Spurs play this high line, his starting positions are very good. And his shot-stopping has been second-to-none, so he really has been a massive find I have to say.”
Apart from his short, stopping ability, Vicario has proven to be a proactive goalkeeper when it comes to his distribution. He has helped set up counter-attacking opportunities for his teammates with his awareness and quick passing.
The 27-year-old will be hoping to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. There is no doubt that he has been an impressive acquisition for Tottenham and the North London club will hope that he can improve further with coaching and experience.
The goalkeeper is yet to enter the peak of his career, and there is plenty of room for improvement in the coming seasons.
