‘Awful’: Jamie Carragher says £43m Tottenham player has actually been really bad this season

Tottenham Hotspur have had something of a mixed start in the Premier League this season.

The north London club are now four games unbeaten in all competitions, but it wasn’t too long ago that questions were being asked of Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, as well as Spurs have done lately, Tottenham are still eighth in the Premier League, and that’s not where they want to be.

Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Spurs’ start to the season and their current squad, and he’s been discussing their defensive issues.

Tottenham had serious defensive problems towards the end of last season, and Jamie Carragher hasn’t been impressed by one player so far this season.

Carragher says that individually, he rates all of Tottenham’s defensive players, but he thinks that Cristian Romero has been awful this season so far.

Cristian Romero has been poor this season

Carragher shared his verdict on the £43m man and his performances for Tottenham this season.

“You look at the back four and you go they’re good players them. The right-back is alright, Udogie did really well last season. Romero is a World Cup winner and everyone things Van de Ven is amazing, lightning quick, every time you watch him it’s ‘oh, he’s a brilliant player.’” Carragher said.

“I think Romero has been awful this season, but my point is that nothing really stands out at you going ‘oh that’s a nightmare,’ but they still concede lots of chances and lots of goals.”

    Tottenham’s defence has been solid

Last season, Tottenham’s defence was poor at times, but this term, they have been quite solid.

Spurs have conceded just five goals in six Premier League games so far this season, that’s a better record than Manchester City and just as good a record as Arsenal.

Romero has had a few gaffes along the way, but, overall, he has been solid enough at the back.

Tottenham’s defence was a real problem last term, but, so far this season, Spurs haven’t looked all that shaky at the back barring a few jitters.
