Tottenham star may have already played his last game for the club as predicament laid bare
Timo Werner will only be able to watch on when Tottenham play in his native Germany on Thursday evening. The attacker does have quite a good record when facing Eintracht Frankfurt having contributed six goals and two assists in 17 games against them during his time in the Bundesliga.
However, Ange Postecoglou will not be able to turn to him at Deutsche Bank Park. The reason for that is because Werner was cut from the head coach’s European squad at the beginning of February in order to accommodate January arrival Mathys Tel.
Amid his struggles in a Tottenham shirt since returning on a year-long loan from RB Leipzig in the summer, his European omission was perhaps a straightforward decision and one that didn’t shock many supporters. After all, he looks a shadow of the player that came to the attention of Europe’s top clubs only a few years ago due to his fine record in front of goal for RB Leipzig.
That has unfortunately deserted him, as has his confidence, since his move to England, with the 29-year-old only managing one goal in 27 appearances in all competitions this season. Werner’s last appearance for Spurs came at the end of February as he was introduced for the final eight minutes of their 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.
Since then he has not made the matchday squad once in their last five Premier League games. Tottenham have seen an increase in their attacking options over the past month or so following some good news on the injury front, thus resulting in Werner taking his place in the stands.
There have been occasions where the Stuttgart-born player could have come into Postecoglou’s squad but he instead opted to name Mikey Moore on the substitutes’ bench in two of their last three Premier League games. Again, that is not so much of a surprise given the teenager’s lively cameos at times this season and also because he has a long-term future in N17 whereas Werner does not.
Werner may have indeed already played his last game for Tottenham with very few fixtures left in the 2024/25 season. Spurs have six games remaining in the league and potentially another three on top of Thursday’s match in Frankfurt if they are to go all the way in the Europa League.
The former Chelsea man is not eligible in Europe and he looks to have quite the challenge on his hands to even regain his place in the Premier League matchday squad now that only Radu Dragusin is in the treatment room. He has only played once for Tottenham since returning from a hamstring injury sustained in early January and it may stay that way for him between now and the end of the season.
The only thing he can do right now is work hard in training, which he was doing ahead of the Eintracht Frankfurt match, and hope that an opportunity arises in what remains of the season. It has been a truly forgetful loan for Werner and it’s not exactly clear where he will be playing his football next season ahead of his summer return to parent club RB Leipzig.
One thing for sure is it’s extremely unlikely to be at Tottenham as they plan for the years ahead after a dismal campaign to date.
