Ange Postecoglou narrowly avoids foul-mouthed slip-up in angry Sky Sports interview

Ange Postecoglou narrowly stopped himself swearing during his post-match interview as he came close to dropping the f-word before quickly backing out as he discussed Tottenham’s latest loss

Ange Postecoglou almost swore live on TV after making a bizarre excuse for his very public spat with the Tottenham fans. Postecoglou cupped his ear at the travelling fans who had mocked him by shouting: “You don’t know what you’re doing” when he brought on Pape Sarr for Lucas Bergvall.

Tottenham substitute Sarr thought he had equalised only for it to be ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up and Postecoglou’s reaction backfired horribly. Spurs boss Postecoglou stopped himself as he said: “We just scored a f… cracking goal and I turned to them to see them smile.”

Postecoglou later added: “Jesus mate, it’s incredible how things get interpreted. We’d just scored, I just wanted to hear them cheer. Because we’d been through a tough time, and I thought it was a cracking goal. I wanted them to get really excited.

“I felt at that point we could potentially go on and win the game. I just felt momentum was on our [side]. It doesn’t bother me, it’s not the first time they’ve booed my substitutions or my decisions, that’s fine, they’re allowed to do that. You know what, I am at such a disconnect with the world these days, that who knows, maybe you’re right. I don’t know. But that’s not what my intention was.”

Under-pressure Postecoglou, who has now lost 16 games from 30 in the Premier League, also mocked VAR for disallowing the goal and insisted it should have stood

He said: “What matters is VAR was called in for clear and obvious errors. I don’t like it, mate, I’ve never liked it, I don’t see how it’s benefitted our game.

“I don’t think anyone would have complained if they went with the referee’s decision because you get some good, you get some bad and you get on with it and the game finishes in 93 or 94 and the game flows rather than us all sitting around waiting. It’s going to be refereed by AI soon. Like I said, we might as well dispense with the players at some point when some genius comes up with a game with no participants at some point.”

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: “Overall, I think it was a very good performance, I think we deserved to win the game.

“If you measure on the result then for sure if we achieve Champions League is an important thing but from my point of view, I try to see how we improve day by day and I can see, since the first day, I think the team is getting better and better.”
