Raphael Honigstein has raved about Tottenham Hotspur’s soon-to-be new signing, Micky van de Ven, and how he was ‘one of the shooting stars’ of the Bundesliga last season.
The German football expert and journalist added that if the deal for Micky van de Ven goes through, then Tottenham will be signing a ‘very good player’, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport. Ange Postecoglou’s side locked horns with Shakhtar Donetsk in a pre-season friendly on Sunday and van de Ven was present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It’s another sign of the Wolfsburg centre-back securing a transfer to the club, it’s just a case of finalising the details – the suggestions are that it is set to be a £43 million transfer.
This is a much-needed player for Postecoglou because one of the club’s biggest problem areas has been the heart of their defence.
And one new face is about to enter the building, with Honigstein giving a lowdown on the player. “He is one of the very shooting stars of the Bundesliga last season,” said Honigstein. “He came out of nowhere to become a really established centre-back in a team, up until the very last day, played for European football and they lost out on the last day.
“He is a really good player. Very good on the ball. Great passing. Good composure. Good positioning. Your really good Dutch centre-back, the way you like them. Still very young. Still learning and still improving.
“Maybe not ready for the very top. But I think Spurs would get a very good player, if they can make this happen.”
Tottenham slowly building
The goalkeeper was a problem area. That has been sorted with a new arrival and Hugo Lloris’ exit. Centre-backs were needed, one is about to join, but more are needed.
The creative department was empty, but Spurs did very well to secure the services of James Maddison from Leicester City.
It’s just now a case of keeping Harry Kane on board and this summer transfer window might just get better.
