Tottenham fans laugh at West Ham United fans’ chant in Premier League showdown
Tottenham fans were laughing at the travelling West Ham fans’ chant of “Champions of Europe, we know what we are” in the Hammers’ 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Hammers have sung the chant since their Europa Conference League victory last season when Jarrod Bowen won the cup in Prague and wasted no time in lauding it over their London rivals.
Spurs fans responded by laughing, which says all they needed to with regard to how they view the respective level and importance of the competition – but Hammers fans will continue to rub it in.
As shared by The Athletic journalist Roshane Thomas on Twitter: “West Ham fans sing ‘Champions of Europe, we know what we are’ and Tottenham fans start laughing.”
Ultimately, West Ham are the Champions of Europe
Whether rival fans like it or not, David Moyes’ side are the current holders of a European Cup. They can say what they like about the level and respect commanded by the competition, but it’s a European trophy nonetheless, and one Spurs don’t have.
The fans will continue to sing the song week in, week out in the Premier League, alongside the “you’ll never sing that” variant reserved for teams like Tottenham and Arsenal who are yet to get their hands on a trophy from any continental competition.
When Bowen scored the winning goal in Prague, he wrote himself into West Ham folklore, cementing his name in the history of the club and making West Ham only the second holders of a European Cup in London – after Chelsea.
In a fantastic result for the club, the fans enjoyed the opportunity to banter with their rivals before the final whistle, with the goading now set to continue throughout the night after a massive 2-1 win for Moyes and his side, as well as the travelling fans.
