‘I’m getting confused’: Mike Dean says West Ham were on the wrong end of a really poor decision

Mike Dean believes that West Ham United were on the end of a really poor refereeing decision recently.

West Ham United have had numerous decisions go against us this season, and now Mike Dean has spoken out in support of us – I never thought I’d be saying that!

Hammers boss David Moyes doesn’t kick up a fuss enough about poor refereeing decisions when they go against us in my opinion.

The referring during our home game against Newcastle this term was shambolic, and the performance from Peter Bankes that day in October really stands out for me.

However, there have been numerous other occasions where we just haven’t been given the benefit of the doubt either, and not just this season either.

Mike Dean explained today how we had a decision go against us last weekend

Mike Dean backs up West Ham

The former Premier League official is now a regular feature on the Soccer Saturday panel, and his job is to give his opinions on certain decisions over the past week that have perhaps caused controversy.

And he responded when asked by host Simon Thomas whether Mohammed Kudus was unlucky to give away a penalty last weekend during our win over Burnley, when speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday today, (Saturday December 2nd, 1:07pm):

“They’ve got it the wrong way round. I don’t think this is a penalty kick, Kudus is just stood there, there might have been the slightest of touches but for me that’s just not a penalty kick at all. I’m getting confused sometimes what’s going on with these penalty kicks.”

In spite of that, Dean did suggest that the referee on the day Sam Barrott got the decision not to award Burnley a penalty inside the first-half wrong, when Vladimir Coufal brought down Luca Koleosho inside the Hammers’ penalty area.

So it all evened out in the end to be fair.

    Mike Dean West Ham record

The 55-year-old handed out six red cards and 137 yellow cards to West Ham players in the 64 games that he refereed for us (Transfermarkt).

Out of those games, we won 23, drew 19 and lost 22. He has certainly never been a popular figure with amongst the Hammers fans.

So with that in mind, it was really nice to hear Mike Dean speak in support of West Ham this afternoon, and it actually made a pleasant change!
