Ex Arsenal and Barca star Alex Song retires having named a former West Ham teammate as one of the best he ever played with

Ex Arsenal and Barca star Alex Song has retired having named a former West Ham teammate as one of the best he ever played with.

Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder Alex Song has officially retired from professional football after a 19-year career.

Song most notably played for West Ham’s London rivals Arsenal and Spanish giants Barcelona.

He also had spells with Bastia, Charlton Athletic, Rubin Kazan, Sion, Sion II, and Arta/Solar7.

A classy, combative defensive midfielder, Song made his name with the Gunners before being sold to Barcelona in 2012 for £15m.

Song named former West Ham teammate as one of the best

The La Liga side would go on to loan him to the Hammers where, injury free, he shone under Sam Allardyce.

Having played alongside so many great players at Arsenal and Barcelona, there will obviously be intrigue as to who Song felt was among the best.

Well ex Arsenal and Barca star Song has retired having named a former West Ham teammate as one of the best he ever played with.

That man being a certain Ravel Morrison.

Some compliment for star who never hit the heights he should have

No doubt Google searches will go through the roof on who Song named as the best he ever played with – as is usually the case when someone retires having spent time with Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo such is the obsession with that particular debate.

And there may be some surprise to learn Song – who played with a long list of world superstars including Messi – apparently waxed lyrical about Morrison.

West Ham Fan TV host Nicky Hawkins was speaking to ex Hammers favourite James Collins who was raving about Morrison and insisting he could have been one of the best players in the world.

Hawkins then tells Collins about Song’s comments on his former West Ham midfield partner.

“I’ve got to tell you this right, Alex Song did an interview – he was asked ‘who was the best players you ever played (with)’ – bearing in mind he was at Barcelona – and he said ‘Ravel Morrison’.”
