Moyes makes extremely bold claim about West Ham transfer funds but it doesn’t add up

David Moyes makes extremely bold claim about West Ham transfer funds but it doesn’t add up given net wealth of owners

David Moyes has made an extremely bold claim about West Ham transfer funds but it doesn’t add up given the net wealth of the club’s owners.

West Ham may not be a top four side in the Premier League.

But they are in the top four when it comes to the boardroom.

In the summer we reported on Hammers News about the net wealth of West Ham’s owners David Sullivan, Daniel Kretinsky, the Gold family, Albert Tripp Smith and other board members.

The West Ham owners are ranked the fourth richest in the Premier League after the combined net worth of the club’s money men hit £10.5bn.

While being self-sufficient should be the ultimate goal of any successful team or business, football fans do expect their owners to invest a certain amount of their own money to make the club a success.

And West Ham fans are no different.

So there was some surprise in the summer when it emerged West Ham had to sell to buy.

Fortunately the Hammers had the big sales of Declan Rice and Gianluca Scamacca with which to buy players.

In fairness it had come after a period of big spending in previous windows.

Now David Moyes has made an extremely bold claim about West Ham transfer funds but it doesn’t add up given the net wealth of the owners.

Moyes has confirmed he wants to remain at West Ham beyond this season – the last of his current deal.

But he has made it clear the Hammers don’t have money to compete with top clubs.

That’s despite having record levels of turnover, the fifth highest attendances in world football and – as mentioned above – the fourth richest owners in the league.

“When I think about the team I had at the start at Everton to the team I had at the end, I had Leighton Baines, Mikel Arteta, Steven Pienaar, Tim Cahill, I had an incredible group of players who were a really good team. I think we’re growing that team (at West Ham),” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“It takes a little bit of time and we’re in a world now where everything is wanted done instantly. Some clubs have money, unless you’re one of those clubs – and we’re not one – we have to go step by step.

“Sometimes you don’t make a big step, sometimes you can step backwards, but over the three or four years we’ve been here now, in the main it’s been steps forwards. We’re going in the right direction.”
