Jamie Carragher expressed his disbelief at the timeframe and potential punishment sent Everton’s way as Manchester City also wait for Premier League financial charge results
Jamie Carragher has warned Manchester City that they could be hit with a much bigger punishment than Everton after it emerged that the Premier League are recommending a 12-point deduction for Sean Dyches’s side after a case against them for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
The Toffees have allegedly been overspending under owner Farhad Moshiri with losses over the past five years. No Premier League side has been handed a deduction for such reasons before though and it could spark a panic across the division.
Manchester City themselves were hit earlier this year with charges of over 115 breaches of regulations across a 14-year period dating back to 2009/10 with the possibility for other sanctions including a transfer embargo and large fines. Despite Everton defending their position, insisting that they have complied with rules, the Telegraph now write that the 12-point recommended punishment is the most likely outcome.
However, former Liverpool defender and current Sky pundit Carragher has sent a strong message to league holders Manchester City. “The PL [Premier League] want a 12-point deduction for Everton for one charge. Man City are going to end up in the National League North if the PL get their way!!” he wrote on Twitter.
“Unbelievable the amount of stories that come out about Everton’s situation, but Man City’s, which has 114 more charges & has gone on for much longer, has gone very quiet.” City have won six league titles in the period that their alleged breaches span, spending nearly £2billion under their owners but winning every prize in club football available to them.
Pep Guardiola’s men became treble winners last term after winning the Champions League for the first time in their history and have assembled one of the best squads and most prolonged periods of domestic dominance in modern English football history. They could be hit with one of the biggest ever punishments though if found guilty of breaching rules.
