Yankees Could Swing Much-Needed Trade With Cardinals for $15 Million Starter By Aaliyan Mohammed Newsweek Updated March 19, 2025 2:47 PM The New York Yankees will be without Gerrit Cole this season after he underwent Tommy John surgery. Luis Gil will miss the start of the season with a lat strain and Clarke Schmidt has been dealing with injuries in cap that could delay his 2025 debut. The Yankees could turn to the trade market to add some help to their rotation. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa called St. Louis Cardinals starter Erick Fedde an early candidate to be traded at the deadline and tabbed the Yankees as a suitor. “Fedde could be the best non-Alcantara starter traded this summer. He’s a very affordable rental ($7.5 million salary) who showed last year that his success in Korea was no fluke,” wrote Axisa. “The Cardinals are in the middle of what POBO John Mozeliak called a ‘reset’ early in the offseason, and it kind of feels like they’re stuck in-between, no? They didn’t add anything significant to the roster but they didn’t sell off any pieces either. They’re in the middle and that’s a bad place to be.” With Cole out for the season and Gil unavailable, the Yankees may not be able to wait until the summer to add a starter.
The Cardinals seem to be rebuilding and trading Fedde for a prospect or two is on the table. Fedde signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Chicago White Sox last offseason before he was traded to the Cardinals. He had a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts with the White Sox before posting a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts with the Cardinals. He could be a valuable addition to the Yankees who will lean heavily on Max Fried to start the season.
