Hammers rebuild | Sullivan’s dream free transfers are fans’ nightmare

Hammers rebuild | Sullivan’s dream free transfers are fans’ nightmare. Having let it be known that the West Ham summer rebuild needs to be completed mostly from the free transfer market, Chairman David Sullivan is either pulling one of his ‘deception strokes’ claiming poverty and then splurging, exactly as West Ham did last summer- with £140 million spent on ten players with “varying degrees of success”: Or the continual pleading of poverty and PSR adherence from the 15th richest club in the world is true and the Irons really will be shopping in the ‘free’ aisles in the summer.

Terrifyingly, there are a host of Sullivan-esque bargain players available in the Summer as free agents which could well glitter in a manner too tempting for West Ham’s chairman to ignore. In a ‘thought provoking ‘look ahead, here is a glimpse of what several free transfers would add to West Ham’s squad, should the club press on with their ‘free transfers only’ policy come August. Of course, I haven’t included the pie-in-the-sky-wishful-thinking free transfers of Jonathan David or Angel Gomes. They’ll have their pick of top teams who will be challenging for honours in Europe. The brave new world of summer ’25 free transfers at London Stadium could include such delights as:

Callum Wilson : A known Sullivan favourite, could just prove too tempting at £17 million cheaper than last year. The 32 year old might finally bring his A game and Z-level fitness to West Ham.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: A another perennial but amazingly still just 27 years old. 126 days out with a broken toe puts him in the Maxwel Cornet fitness camp though.

Kyle Walker – Peters: Actually quite an appealing free signing – can play on both wings and would be superb matching up in the same side as AWB

Victor Lindelof: 30 years old and possibly with a few more miles on the clock. Would appeal to Sullivan but a Manchester United discard. Enough said.

Don’t be surprised to see one, or more, of these free signings rock up at West Ham in the summer: Whilst this was a light hearted exposé of free Summer options, there is some decent value in the free market heading towards us and with West Ham pleading poverty and a big rebuild still required, would Hammers fans see these signings as an upgrade on the current squad, sitting on our bench come end of August?I suspect so.
