“Might find it hard” | Merson drops baffling take on West Ham’s new signings

Paul Merson has given a baffling take on some of West Ham’s new Summer signings. Everyone is entitled to their opinion when it comes to football, but when someone’s dropped as many awful takes as Paul Merson you really have to ask yourself at what point do we stop letting him voice them?

His latest controversial opinion surrounds two of West Ham’s new signings, Niclas Fullkrug and Crysencio Summerville. “West Ham have bought well this season,” Merson stated.

“I feel Niclas Fullkrug can have an impact, I’m a big fan of his and he scored for Germany during the international break. I thought Chelsea should’ve looked to sign him. It was a bit of a surprise to me when they did not make a move. The Blues don’t have a proper striker at the moment.”

“West Ham’s other new signing Crysencio Summerville might find it hard to impress, though. Every full-back in the Premier League is a full international, so it’s not like the Championship where he dominated.”

While what he says about Fullkrug by itself is reasonable, it’s when you take into account what he says about Summerville that makes the whole thing just baffling.

Summerville has arguably looked better than Fullkrug in the limited game time both have had. Although it’s a huge leap up to the Premier League, the winger has actually produced at that level before where the German has never played outside of his home country. It’s just contradictory if nothing else.

Fullkrug may well go on to be a better player for the club than Summerville this season, but to suggest the Dutchman will flop due to coming from the Championship is just poor punditry.
