“Kicking themselves” | Hammers regret to signing sensational striker

West Ham’s decision not to sign this striker is worse than passing on Julian Alvarez. No matter what your opinion on David Moyes is, there’s no denying that the large majority of his recruitment during his time as West Ham manager was pretty excellent.

The likes of Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, and Mohammed Kudus were all brought in during his time as gaffer, and his recruitment is one of the key reasons he was able to take the Hammers from relegation favourites to European champions.

However, that’s not to say he hasn’t had his fair share of horror stories. The one everyone will understandably think of is the loan signing of Kalvin Phillips, a deal that may have cost the Scotsman his job, but it’s arguably who he didn’t sign that will haunt him even more.

It’s common knowledge that he had the opportunity to sign Julian Alvarez before he joined Manchester City, but he rejected him. According to Claret and Hugh, the club also has the chance to bring in Viktor Gyokeres for just £17 million, but their indecisiveness allowed Sporting Lisbon to secure his signature instead.

The Swedish international would go on to be involved in an absolutely ludicrous 39 goals in 33 Liga Portugal games last season, with him already scoring 7 and assisting 1 in the first 4 league games of this campaign.

With the recent news that Niclas Fullkrug is injured, West Ham will be kicking themselves that they didn’t sign Gyokeres a year ago. Despite playing in Portugal, he’s undoubtedly one of the best forwards in the world at the moment and he could have been the final piece to the puzzle at the London Stadium.
