‘Plenty of signs of promise’: Nation’s media praises £70k-a-week Spurs talent for his international display last night

Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson was in international action for Wales on Friday night.

The Tottenham attacker started for Craig Bellamy’s side in their UEFA Nations League meeting with Turkiye in Cardiff.

Johnson was making his 28th appearance for the Dragons as they looked to get their campaign for promotion from League B off to a good start.

Wales, in Bellamy’s debut match as manager, showed plenty of promise but ultimately had to settle for a point against the Euro 2024 quarter-finalists.

Johnson’s performance on the night was mixed, as he showed flashes of quality but largely struggled on the delivery front.

As per Sofascore, the Spurs man attempted four crosses and one long ball, but failed to hit the target with any of his deliveries. He also lost possession 11 times.

BBC Sport pundit Helen Ward described the Tottenham man as a “bit raw”, while the Welsh press focused on the potential he is showing and how he could improve.

Welsh media says Tottenham ace Brennan Johnson showed ‘plenty of signs of promise’

Wales Online gave Johnson 7 out of 10 and wrote: “A thorn in the side of Turkey all evening. Finishing looked a little rusty, but plenty of signs of promise there.”

Meanwhile, Y Clwb Pel-Droed gave the Spurs man a 6 out of 10 and wrote: Johnson worked hard down the right-hand side causing issues for the opposition defence going forward and contributed defensively.

“He was wasteful with crossing opportunities at times, especially with the visitors down a man and there is a feeling that there is still a lot more to see from him in a Wales shirt, with the hopes that over time Bellamy can bring it out of him.”

    Johnson has high potential

Johnson is clearly a top talent, otherwise Tottenham wouldn’t have spent over £47million for him. He was a revelation for Nottingham Forest, hence Spurs investing in him.

No doubt Johnson will kick on under Ange Postecoglou at Spurs and Bellamy in the Wales setup.

    When could Johnson play next?

Wales are next in action on Monday 9 September when they face Montenegro in Podgorica.

Johnson will then return to N17, with a game against Arsenal coming up when the Premier League resumes.

The North London derby takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 15 September.
