‘I was surprised’: Jamie Redknapp shares his shock about Kilman, nothing to do with £40m fee

Jamie Redknapp shares his surprise about Max Kilman, nothing to do with £40m fee. Jamie Redknapp has opened up on something that shocked him about West Ham United defender Max Kilman.

West Ham paid Wolves £40 million to bring Max Kilman to the London Stadium back in July, and he has already proven to be an excellent addition for the club.

Max Kilman has stood out in every single game West Ham have played so far this season, and it’s now clear to see why Julen Lopetegui was so keen to bring him to the London Stadium. The West Ham head coach managed the 27-year-old at Wolves, and he obviously trusts the towering centre-back implicitly.

Jamie Redknapp is a huge fan of Kilman as well it seems – no surprise there of course. However, the Sky Sports pundit has shared something about the Hammers defender that stopped him in his tracks.

The central defensive powerhouse has totally transformed us as a defensive unit, and he has proven to be a huge upgrade on Kurt Zouma.

He looks fit as a fiddle, is incredibly strong in the air and along the ground, and commands his penalty area with real authority.

In addition to all of those things, he has clearly taken on the responsibility of initiating some of our attacks by stepping out from the back at pace with the ball at his feet. I have absolutely no doubts that the former Wolves man will go on to be an exceptional player for us over the next five years or so.

Not only is he a superb player, but he’s a proper leader at the back as well – something we’ve missed since Angelo Ogbonna was playing regularly for us. Jamie Redknapp discussed Kilman, during his appearance on Sky Sports yesterday (August 31st, 5:17pm).

He said, “Max Kilman has been a really good signing for the club. I was surprised when I looked at that England squad this week, I thought he might have just got in there because he’s a ball-playing centre-back, he can come out with the ball, we saw the assist as Crystal Palace. Very comfortable on the ball, what you’d call a modern day centre-back, very good defensively. I’ve been very impressed with him, he’s a leader – a good signing.“

Max Kilman has been superb for West Ham

I make Redknapp 100% spot on here. Kilman has been sensational for the Hammers since swapping Molineux for the London Stadium earlier this summer.

The 27-year-old has led by example at the back and has been the standout performer for West Ham so far this season. Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Kilman cuts an imposing figure, but as Redknapp rightly points out, he’s a very cultured player as well.

The way that the former Maidenhead defender carries the ball out of defence really is incredible to watch, and he has made a huge difference for us already. Jamie Redknapp shared his surprise that Max Kilman wasn’t included in Lee Carsley’s England squad for the upcoming international fixtures.

I totally agree with him. Surely the West Ham man will have better luck when the Three Lions squad is announced next month, if he maintains his current levels of course.
