A well respected pundit was full of praise for a West Ham star following his immense performance against Crystal Palace.
Heading into the Summer transfer window, there was one area that needed to be addressed more than any other and that was the central defenders. West Ham conceded an embarrassing 74 goals in the Premier League last season, the most in their history.
When Julen Lopetegui took over from David Moyes it was clear he had one player in mind who he believed would solve the Hammers’ defensive woes, one player who he wanted to sign no matter the cost: Max Kilman.
Although many were sceptical about paying £40 million for the former Wolves captain, he’s more than proven his worth in the opening two games of the Premier League season. His assist and overall performance against Crystal Palace in particular was sensational, and Micah Richards was singing his praises on Match of the Day.
“He’s a quality player, I mean only the three relegated teams conceded more than West Ham last season and that’s why I think he’s invested in him,” Richards stated.
“In terms of positioning, in terms of organising the defence, in terms of playing out from the back and making tackles, I think he’s got the full package. I think he’s going to be a real star for West Ham.”
Although Mavropanos has been impressive too, it’s frightening to think of a back line that consists of Kilman, Todibo, Emerson, and Wan-Bissaka. Our Irons have gone from having one of the worst defences in the league to one of the best in the space of one transfer window, on paper at least. It’s been a promising start even without Todibo and Wan-Bissaka starting, just imagine how strong the defence will be when they do.
